About the Brauneck Bergbahn

In winter, the Brauneck in Lenggries is known beyond the borders of the country as a family ski area. In the winter season from December to the end of March, the company operates the 4-seater gondola lift, 4 chairlifts and 2 T-bar lifts for transporting alpine winter sports enthusiasts.
In the summer season from the beginning of May to the beginning of November, only the gondola lift is in operation and mainly transports excursionists, hikers, sport climbers, paragliders and hang-gliders up to Brauneck. The panorama restaurant at the top station of the Brauneck cable car is a magnet for visitors in both summer and winter. The Brauneck cable car, which operates all year round, is one of the main tourist attractions in the Isarwinkel region.

As early as the 1920s, the Brauneck was described in newspaper articles with the headline "Skiing in the Lenggries mountains". Today, the Brauneck is a recreational and vacation area with an international reputation. Both skiers and mountain hikers will find a true mountain paradise here in unspoiled nature, but with all the sporting possibilities.

The foundation stone for our success was laid in 1952 when Brauneck Bergbahn GmbH Lenggries was founded. Soon afterwards, the first cable car gondolas gently glided towards the summit, opening up this uniquely beautiful area to our guests from all over the world. Since its launch more than 50 years ago, the Brauneck Bergbahn can look back on a long and consistent success story.

Local mountain with tradition

"Out-of-towners" was the term used in those days on the upper reaches of the Isar for the people from Munich who boarded the train in droves in Lenggries in the 1920s and 1930s and made the arduous three-hour hike up the mountain with their boards on their shoulders.

And this is how the people of Lenggries discovered that their town was a desirable winter sports destination for Munich, just 60 kilometers away. In order to do justice to "its special and leading position in the Bavarian mountains", as was written at the time, the Brauneck was to be equipped with a lift.

At the instigation of the then mayor Taubenberger and in close cooperation with the local ski club, it was finally decided in 1952 to build a cable car - an extremely arduous undertaking with shovel, ice axe and the like in those days without modern equipment as we know it today.

In November 1957, after just 16 months of construction, the 3.2-kilometre-long lift was ceremoniously put into operation - in a way, it was the starting point for the success story of a winter sports resort and the foundation stone for many other investments such as the Milchhäusl 6-seater express.

The Brauneck Bergbahn is now an important economic factor in the Tölzer Land region and has also done its "homework" in terms of sustainability in small, sustainable steps over the years: for example, the cable car company is responsible for maintaining the Upper Isar biotope as a compensatory measure.

  • 1957 The pricing policy for the opening was curious from today's perspective: locals paid DM 3.50 for the ascent and descent - out-of-towners paid a hefty DM 5.50!
  • In 1958 , 170,000 ascents were already counted.
  • In 1960, the German Alpine Ski Championships took place on the Brauneck as a glittering highlight.
  • In 1968, the Idealhang was connected as part of the expansion of the lift network. Start of motorized slope preparation.
  • 1975 Construction of the Ahorn lift completes the ski circuit on the Brauneck.
  • In 1980, the men's FIS World Cup slalom takes place at Brauneck.
  • 1981 Eighteen T-bar lifts, two chairlifts - skiing on the Brauneck is increasingly becoming a mass popular sport. Investments are also made in comfort - for example in the new sun terrace at the mountain station.
  • 1990 Start of the snowmaking era for more snow reliability and slope quality. Construction of a four-seater chairlift on the Ahornlift.
  • 1993 Demolition of the old valley station and new construction closer to the mountain. Pleasing effects: Shorter travel time and higher hourly capacity for transporting guests and equipment.
  • 2000 New 4-seater panorama gondolas. Enthusiasts were able to purchase the original gondolas from the 1950s for 100 DM each.
  • 2004 Reconstruction of the mountain station, new handicapped accessible exit area with lift, implementation of an environmentally friendly supply and disposal system and opening of the modern panorama restaurant.
  • 2012 Reservoir at Garland as an investment in the safety of the lake.
  • 2014 Inauguration of the "Milchhäuslexpress" - an ultra-modern 6-seater chairlift with boarding aid for children and heated seats.
